For the fourth consecutive year, the ÈÕº«ÎÞÂë has secured £600,000 in funding from the UK Government’s Turing Scheme, totalling more than £2.6m since its launch in 2021.
The Turing Scheme provides grants for education providers to support students to undertake study and work placements around the world. Sussex is proud to have one of the largest and oldest study abroad networks in the UK, having facilitated overseas studies since the 1960s. This year’s funding will give 164 Sussex students, particularly from a widening participation background, the chance to participate in overseas placements across 34 countries, develop new skills, and boost their employability.
The scheme has a key focus on social inclusion and supporting students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Almost 65% of the University’s student recipients will be from a widening participation background, with over 90 students registered with SEND. Widening participation students will also receive an enhanced cost-of-living uplift and travel funding.
Rohan McCarthy-Gill, Head of Global Mobility, said: “In the context of the cost-of-living crisis both in the UK and some overseas destinations, the Turing Scheme is an important channel of funding to assist students to participate in global placements.”
