Design of Electrical Drive Systems (H8009Z)

Design of Electrical Drive Systems

Module H8009Z

Module details for 2025/26.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 6

Module Outline

This module will give students opportunities to underpin the knowledge acquired in module 鈥淚ntroduction to Electrical Drive Systems鈥 via designing a practical project. Through this module, students will master how to use MATLAB/SIMULINK to design DC machines, AC machines and induction machines, space vector PWM.
Main topics of this module include:
鈥 Introduction to fundamentals of electrical drive simulation with MATLAB/Simulink
鈥 Mathematical and simulation models for DC machines
鈥 Mathematical and simulation models for AC machines
鈥 Mathematical and simulation models for induction machines

Module learning outcomes

Systematically understand the fundamentals and key aspects of advanced control strategies of electrical drives along with their simulation models using MATLAB/Simulink

Demonstrate their ability to apply acquired knowledge to design DC machines, AC machines, induction machines or PWM inverters, solve the practical problems and carry out individual or group project within the discipline

Demonstrate their ability to deploy accurately established techniques of analysis and enquiry within the discipline, and to describe and comment upon certain aspects of current research within the discipline.

Demonstrate their ability to collaborate with team members to accomplish a practical design and communicate the ideas, design procedure, solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audience

Please note that the University will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver courses and modules in accordance with the descriptions set out here. However, the University keeps its courses and modules under review with the aim of enhancing quality. Some changes may therefore be made to the form or content of courses or modules shown as part of the normal process of curriculum management.

The University reserves the right to make changes to the contents or methods of delivery of, or to discontinue, merge or combine modules, if such action is reasonably considered necessary by the University. If there are not sufficient student numbers to make a module viable, the University reserves the right to cancel such a module. If the University withdraws or discontinues a module, it will use its reasonable endeavours to provide a suitable alternative module.
