Module Outline

The module covers the principles of design of machine components commonly used in mechanical engineering applications. The module emphasises on role of statics, stress analysis, and materials choice in the design process. The main types of mechanical components failure as well as methods of prevention or prediction of such failures are also covered. The main aims of the module are:
- To help students understand how stress and strain affect design of mechanical components
- Place mechanical design in the context of manufacturing processes
- Make students aware of failure, reliability and safety issues and the implications on costs of mechanical components
- Make students aware of how efficiency of machine components and environmental problems can be approached at the design stage.

The syllabus covers the following AHEP4 learning outcomes: C3, C5, C6, C7, C8, C11, C14, C16, M3, M5, M6, M7, M8, M11, M14, M16

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the role and functionality of various machine components. Use appropriate literature and understand the role of the choice of materials and manufacturing processes upon the strength, durability, safety, cost and environmental impact in the mechanical design process. Use appropriate methods to evaluate the reliability and operational life of machine components

Apply appropriate analytical techniques in solving complex problems of mechanical design of machine components, evaluating the limitations of such techniques

Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the main types of lubrication mechanisms, of their effect on the efficiency of mechanical systems and how these can used to prevent/delay failure of machine components

Identify and analyse ethical concerns and make reasoned ethical choices in the context of the design of mechanical systems and recognise responsibilities, benefits and importance of supporting equality, diversity and inclusion in the design process.
