FHEQ Level 6

Module Outline

The Individual Project in Year 3 builds upon all your modules to date to explore in depth an engineering problem in the area of your study. This module spans the full project cycle, including conceptualising, planning, management, and dissemination. The project demands creative thinking, self-organisation, research skills, and interaction with skilled people. It involves design, development, and testing of a system, and including constriction or prototyping (for hardware projects), and software simulations or code development (for software projects). The project is assessed by an interim report, a final technical report, and an oral presentation.

The syllabus covers the following AHEP4 learning outcomes: C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, C8, C9, C12, C13, C15, C17, M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8, M9, M12, M13, M15, M17

Module learning outcomes

Apply creativity to the solution of an engineering research problem involving design, implementation, testing, and analysis

Undertake the planning of a project, identifying resources required, estimating effort and forming contingency plans for unexpected outcomes and problems arising

Apply engineering principles to address the chosen problem and demonstrate the ability to deal with technical uncertainty

Research and use technical literature and other information sources, select and deploy appropriate technical methods and techniques to address the problem

Use a risk management process to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks (the effects of uncertainty) associated with the activities in the project

Exercise professional judgments in terms of cost, market, environment, sustainability, safety and ethics

Deliver an oral presentation in order to communicate the technical information and findings of the project clearly to a combined specialist and non-specialist audience

Document the implementation and findings of the project in technical reports
