Module Outline

This course provides students taking the programme with the opportunity to complete under expert supervision a dissertation on a topic of their choosing relevant to the programme themes. The subject will be chosen in consultation with the Programme Convenor. Students will embark on preparation of the dissertation following completion of the Research Methods and Professional Skills module and submission of a research outline. A desk-based or original empirical study will be undertaken, enabling students to pursue in-depth research on an aspect of Conflict, Security and Development.

Module learning outcomes

Identify and develop a research question within the field of the programme of study

Demonstrate the ability to execute a sustained programme of original research

To show in-depth understanding of a major theme or argument in the chosen subject, including an independent critical engagement with the topic chosen

Identify and apply the conceptual understandings and practical research skills necessary for the thorough and coherent exploration of their chosen topic, and to make use of appropriate primary and secondary sources and tools of analysis

To complete a well-structured and fully-argued piece of written work meeting standard requirements of academic writing, including the review and referencing of relevant primary and secondary sources
