Right to work

Have your right to work check undertaken by HR:

You cannot commence your employment in the UK until a valid right to work check has been carried out.

If you are a UK or Irish national

Please follow  to book a time to come and visit us.   

Your appointment will take place at Sussex House. Please bring your passport and wait for us at reception.

If you don’t have a passport, please bring a copy of your full birth certificate and acceptable evidence of your National Insurance Number e.g. P45/Payslip.

If you are not a UK or Irish national

If you hold a BRP card, an eVisa or Settled/Pre-Settled Status under the EU Settlement scheme we ask that you complete the online   

You can view your own record in relation to your right to work and you will receive a “share code”. Please email the share code to hradmin.tutors@sussex.ac.uk or share through the online service.

You can then schedule a video call with us to verify your identity using the links provided below.

Please also scan/email copies of your passport, and if you were issued one, your BRP card to hradmin.tutors@sussex.ac.uk for record keeping purposes.

If you are unable to obtain a share code, you will need to come into the university with documents for a right to work check e.g. visa vignette in your passport. Please follow  to book a time to come and visit us and please scan/email copies of your documentation to hradmin.tutors@sussex.ac.uk in advance so we can ensure it is valid for a right to work check.

For the purposes of staff diversity accreditation, we kindly ask that if you hold dual nationality and are happy to share this information, please send through your dual nationality passport.

Working while studying - Important information

If you are a tier 4/student visa holder, you must ensure that the actual hours you work do not exceed 20 hours per week. This includes all Tutor work including additional hours and other paid or unpaid employment inside or outside of the University.

Preparation hours must be worked in the same week as the teaching is delivered.

You are in breach of your visa if the 20 hours per week is exceeded and the University will be obliged to report this to UKVI. 

This means that you may be unable to accept some Offers of Work from the University and those offering you this work will be aware it may be ncessary for Tutors to refuse work on this basis.  If you have any questions or queries, please discuss with your module convenor and refer to the guidance   

If you are an EU citizen holding an EHIC, you will not be able to reclaim the £4k NHS surcharge if you undertake any work on your student visa whilst you are in this country.

 Failure to complete a right to work check will result in you not being offered work at the university.
