£45,000 investment in doctoral facilities
Following feedback from student representatives, the Doctoral School Board commissioned some research into the current state of facilities for doctoral students within our Academic Schools. The work was undertaken by a current doctoral researcher (Kourosh Kouchakpour, ESW) and was reported to the December meeting of the Doctoral School Board.
As a result, over forty-five thousand pounds will be spent on improving the space and facilities for doctoral students, with an allocation to each School. The funding will provide, inter alia, new computing equipment (e.g. replacing PCs that are over 3 years old), improved storage provision (e.g. lockers) and replacement furniture. In two Schools, the funding will support the provision of new space for doctoral researchers.
Despite this positive news, space and facilities remains an ongoing area for review as the campus population continues to expand; we are exploring further options for improving the work space available for doctoral students.
I am particularly grateful for the support of the student representatives who have met with the Doctoral School and contributed ideas for improving space and facilities.

South Downs National Park Student Conference - Tuesday 7th July
The South Downs National Park Authority have announced the date of the second South Downs student conference, which will be taking place on Tuesday 7th July at the South Downs Centre, Midhurst.
The conference, which is free to attend, also provides a unique opportunity for students including doctoral researchers to present their research to an audience of their peers, industry experts, academics and National Park Authority staff.
Submissions are invited from researchers whose research could be applied to the National Park and those who live, work and enjoy it, for example, around landscape, communities, cultural heritage, biodiversity, and access and recreation.
Participation in the conference offers:
- Abstract publication in the conference proceedings
- A chance to network with fellow researchers
- The opportunity to present your own research
- A selection of inspiring workshops and stalls
- Prizes for the best presentations and posters
