Thesis Boot Camp on 22nd/23rd July marks the end of the 2016-17 Researcher Development Programme. We'll be back in September with a full programme and some interesting new workshops. Keep an eye on our webpages for updates.

Writing for publication: 22nd June, 09.30 – 16.30

Publishing your work and sharing your findings is a key component of a successful research career. A significant time investment is required to successfully publish a paper and several skills are used during the process including collaborative writing, figure design, analysis and concise written communication.

With 30,000 journals to choose from and various publishing models to consider, researchers need to be aware of which option will work best for them.

In this full day workshop, participants will be introduced to the publication process and they will be encouraged to think about their own publication strategy.

Sussex Community Festival - 25th June, 11.00 - 16.00

On Sunday 25th June, all students and staff are invited to bring their family, friends and neighbours onto campus for the University's first ever Sussex Community Festival.

The festival will offer a range of events and activities, including sports classes, crafts, interactive workshops, and live music.

Practical assertiveness for researchers: 13th July, 10.00 – 13.00

You may not be able to control every situation, but you can (with practice) change the way you communicate, and that can have a positive influence on the responses of others. Assertive behaviour is a skill that will help you communicate directly, honestly, and appropriately in your interactions with others. Developing these skills will grow your confidence in handling challenging situations at work and in your professional relationships.

Within the workshop a variety of strategies will be discussed and practiced, so that you can find the techniques that work best for you. This workshop is conducted in a safe and confidential environment.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Identify assertive, passive, aggressive & passive-aggressive behaviours
  • Analyse the impact of their communication behaviours on interactions with others
  • Practise & evaluate assertiveness techniques for different situations
  • Experience the benefits of communicating assertively
  • Feel more confident in handling difficult situations

The Brilliant Club Information Event: for researchers in their 2nd year and onwards: 14th July, 11.00 - 12.30

The Brilliant Club is an award-winning charity that recruits, trains and pays doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to deliver programmes of university-style teaching based on their own research to small tutorial groups of high-performing pupils in schools that serve disadvantaged communities.

This information session will introduce the work, vision and mission of The Brilliant Club, and explain how working with The Brilliant Club might supplement your professional development. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the presentation, and you will be shown how to apply to be a Brilliant Club tutor if you wish to.

Thesis Boot Camp: 22nd - 23rd July

Thesis Boot Camp is an intensive and supportive writing environment for late-stage doctoral researchers. The core idea is to give you the necessary, time, space and encouragement to make significant progress on your first draft. It's not designed to provide specific advice on editing, restructuring, or polishing a thesis - the focus is on overcoming writer's block to produce a large number of words.

Support is provided through short tutorials, group discussion, and 1-2-1 consultations with the facilitator. Attendees are required to complete preparatory tasks to get the most out of the weekend. The weekend is fully catered, but no overnight accommodation is available.

The programme is facilitated by Dr Catherine Pope.

Attendees are required to complete preparatory tasks to get the most out of the weekend.

Apply by midnight on Sunday 2nd July
