What is coaching?

Coaching is a professional relationship in which a trained coach works with an individual or a group of individuals, known as the coachees, to help them achieve specific and measurable goals. These goals could be related to personal development, career advancement, skill enhancement, or overcoming challenges.

The coaching process is client-centered, meaning that the coachee takes an active role in defining their goals, identifying challenges, and determining the steps needed to reach their objectives. A good coach won't tell you what to do, but they will provide a structured framework and utilise questioning techniques to help you work out your own solutions and support you while you implement them. Coaches also provide a level of accountability, ensuring that individuals stay committed to their goals and take the necessary actions to achieve them.

Coaching at Sussex

Over the past few years, the Organisational Development team have arranged coaching sessions to:

  • help managers think through how to lead their teams through change
  • support staff who have moved into a new role
  • guide staff who are facing difficult or challenging situations at work
  • address performance issues

We have an established network of trained coaches, both internal and external. If you would like to investigate coaching as a developmental option for yourself or a member of your team, please contact the OD team.
