Why are some countries rich and other countries poor?
What is the role of States across time in facilitating or blocking development?
On this module, you will:
- gain an understanding of the modern state and its relation to development
- study the key theoretical traditions of liberalism, statism and Marxism
- explore the rise of the major capitalist states, the rise of welfare states, the East Asian development experience, dynamics of development in the former Soviet bloc, neoliberalism and alternatives to development.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the different theoretical perspectives which have been used to explain, interpret and evaluate the place of the state in development
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the development experiences and trajectories of a range of different states and state forms
- Formulate academically informed opinions about the relationship between the state and development
