International field trips

Take part in our field trips and experience international relations in action.

The IR field trips are an exciting opportunity for MA students to experience the inner workings of key international and regional political organisations, speak to policy makers and understand the policy world. If you are interested in a career in policy, the field trips are not to be missed! If you are a student on one of the following MA courses, you can attend our exciting field trips to Geneva and Brussels:

  • International Relations
  • Global Political Economy
  • Conflict, Security and Development
  • Geopolitics and Grand Strategy
  • International Security
  • Global Governance

The field trips are optional and students are expected to cover their own expenses which include travel, hostel accommodation, food and entry to some places of importance. Students are also expected to ensure they have made arrangements for visas (if this is appropriate) in advance of the trips. International students can for help with this process.

Autumn: Geneva field trip

The historically significant city of Geneva is home to some of the most important international organisations in the world. You get to see UN agencies and other global institutions, discuss with key experts and policy makers, and get policy perspectives on evolving current issues and crises from within the policy-making world. In the past we have visited the UN Office at Geneva (Palais des Nations), the International Committee of the Red Cross, the World Trade Organisation, the International Labour Organisation, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Spring: Brussels field trip

Brussels is home to some of the most important EU institutions in Europe and really great waffles! You will get to visit key European and international institutions, and national delegations, discuss with key experts and policy makers, and get policy perspectives on evolving current issues and crises from within the policy making world. In the past we have visited the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European External Action Service, the Fragility and Resilience Unit/DEVCO, the European Economic and Social Committee, the EU Support Group for Ukraine, NATO, the US Mission to the EU and the International Labour Organisation Brussels.
