This session will kick off with an introduction to studying psychology at university, highlighting the key differences from A-level/BTEC, and exploring the diverse career opportunities available. You'll also get an inside look at what a typical week in the life of a clinical and research psychologist is like.
The main focus of the session will be on research ethics in psychology. We鈥檒l begin by outlining the core ethical principles and codes in the UK, and discuss their application in both clinical and psychological research. Following this, students will engage in an interactive small group activity where they鈥檒l tackle ethical dilemmas that psychologists face.
The session is designed to mirror the teaching methods and content of first-year undergraduate psychology courses, building directly on what you鈥檝e studied at A-level/BTEC. No prior knowledge of psychology is required鈥攋ust bring your curiosity!
- Biology: Diagnosing Diseases using Microbes
This taster session will involve an introduction to microbiology and a hands-on activity where the students will help investigate and diagnose a disease using a variety of provided resources. The session will help show students how different techniques are used to diagnose diseases.
- English linguistics: The multidisciplinary nature of Linguistics
As a doctoral researcher in Linguistics, my sessions explore the key areas of linguistics studied at degree level, aiming to convey that linguistics and the study of language is highly multi-disciplinary and has branches in a number of subjects. I introduce students to areas including social variation, forensic linguistics and child language acquisition. As my research focuses on grammatical variation in a creole language, I will also discuss language ideologies, as well as how languages are similar and different to one another.
- Neuroscience: Neuroscience of sensory experience
As part of an undergraduate neuroscience degree, you learn about how the brain processes and integrates sensory information. These are abilities we use everyday without much thought, but the neural processing involved is quite complex and can provide insights into how our brains work to process different forms of information. My sessions will draw on a number of materials highlight how our brains are well suited to these functions, but also some of the challenges they face.
- Economics: How does Economics impact voting?
How do economic policies and conditions shape the way people vote? In this interactive lesson, students will explore the connection between economics and voting decisions through engaging activities, including a hands-on budgeting exercise and a campaign simulation. By debating real-world policies and making voting choices, they will uncover how financial interests, government spending, and economic priorities influence elections. This session encourages critical thinking about the role of economics in democracy and personal decision-making at the ballot box.
